Welcome to Gab Gets Lost!

After much debate, I have been convinced to start a travel blog to share and record my family’s trip through South America and Antarctica in January 2020. I’m looking forward to adding photos, videos and recaps of the day as often as possible (South American wifi permitting!). Following our trip you will be able to find posts with highlights from our past adventures across the globe as well as iconic Australian locations and events. If you’re a millennial or trying to be one, Gab Gets Lost is also on Instagram with some top shots.

Behind every great name there’s a great story – Gab Gets Lost is no exception to the rule. I may have inherited the travel bug from my family but I missed the gene for a sense of direction. Nevertheless I’m used to traversing across the corners of the globe and I have always made my way home!

So without further ado, here’s a little bit about me and how Gab Gets Lost emerged.

I grew up on my family’s beef cattle property in rural Australia surrounded by animals and half an hour from the nearest town. No doubt this played a role in wildlife-centric trips in years to come.

Before my younger sister Indigo and I reached high school, we would all pack up and explore different parts of remote and outback Australia for a month every year. We firmly believe that because our home country is such an expansive and dynamic place that it deserves as many adventures as we have overseas. They were always a fantastic time and uniquely Australian. As this blog progresses, our favourite stories of saving hatchling turtles, being stalked by dingoes and discovering Aboriginal rock art in Arnhem Land will be added to the mix.

I was lucky that my mother strongly encouraged us to write journals for every day of our Australian adventures. In a way, these were the early days of Gab Gets Lost! A few years ago I rediscovered all of those journals and produced an artwork based on our fondest memories for my final year at school. Each drawing I did provided me with a moment of great retrospection on one particular place and my experiences there. I hope the New-Age New-Tech version of Gab Gets Lost will give me a similar space for reflection just as much as it will entertain anyone reading along.

During my years at high school my family shifted towards holidays overseas. Our passion for wildlife and recognition of climate change as a serious factor in its demise directed us to visit places, people and animals that may not be there within twenty years. Our top adventures saw us hiking through Bornean rainforest to find orangutans, joining a remote Eskimo village in Northern Alaska, swimming with sea lions in the Galapagos and climbing a very active volcano in Vanuatu. While I took a break from keeping my journals, I started to pick up a couple of cameras and captured our globetrotting in a whole new way – with some successful shots if I may say!

However, I am just as keen a writer now as then – and hopefully a better one – and that has pushed me to study a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism at University. Most of the news stories I am producing are strongly connected to the idea of sustainability, climate change action and the environment. All of these have been posted on individual websites I have created, so its about time I started Gab Gets Lost where my stories are all in the same place. My career goal would be to work with National Geographic so perhaps this is the very first starting point for that too.

Launching Gab Gets Lost makes me excited for a lot of reasons. I’m looking forward to our 2020 South America and Antarctica trip and writing all about it, I’m keen to revisit my family’s past trips and hopefully its a symbol of the many adventures to come!

Be part of the action and get lost with Gab!
